I beg to differ; he said, "there are only 12 ships like her," I interpret that to be an inclusive statement meaning that there are 11 other ships, like the Enterprise. Of course, many people interpret it like you did that there are 12 _other_ ships. Hence the 13 ship names on the decals in the AMT model kit. That always bothered me.

This show simply has more pinnacle level of excellence episodes, than any other series, period. The ratio is absurd, and the worst episodes of TE are still brilliant- no moment of screen time is ever wasted. There are almost no wasted plots or exposition for no purpose.

One thing I didn't like in this episode was that at the end of the episode Kirk seemed to make a move on Prime Marlena, which goes against his stablished behavior of maintaining a professional distance between himself and female subordinates - see Dagger of the Mind and Court Martial. You could argue that he was only planning on being friendly towards her, without any romantig entanglements, but I'm not convinced.

This is perhaps one of the more ridiculous episodes in the whole series, and very much the point that, if they had a 50 episode show, should have been expanded to 4-5 episodes at least, but it gets the point across. In a way despite its issues it encapsulates robotech/macross in its ups and downs as much as any of the rest of the series. A lot of this show gets the point across. Every once in a while its truly brilliant and gives itself time to breathe, but a lot of times you just have to see what they're getting and usually it's not that much of a struggle to do so.

To answer some of your questions.... No real plot was skipped converting from the Japanese. There was a scene where Claudia hops on to Roy when he's in bed. And a poster of a topless girl on the wall. Some other sexual stuff is altered. When in the arcade, that long pan of Miriya, Max is figuring out her boob size. Also, depending on which version of the Robotech dub you have, there might be stuff related to alcohol missing. In the original airing of the Robotech in some states a scene was cut. And in some a whole episode was cut. You haven't reached those yet. Also the reason why the animation dips, is because the company making this was behind in production. So the farmed out episodes to another company. When the animation is really good is when these two animators are personally doing it. When the animation is gorgeous is when Hideaki Anno is doing it. When characters are gorgeous Haruhiko (HAL) Mikimoto has drawn it. I should also add Shōji Kawamori. He designed the ships and will later rise to be the head of later Macross sequels, starting with Macross Plus.

Prior to Star Trek TNG, Robotech/Macross showed me things like a 'love triangle', loss of life (in a cartoon), despair, hope and.. interracial relationships. You could say Max and Miriya can also be regarded as such despite the same human dna shenanigans. When these episodes aired, we lived in a different time and place (Netherlands) where racism and segregation were more common and accepted. So this show was quite the eye opener on many fronts and is exactly why it's regarded and praised as one of the first animations showcasing mature subjects to kids in a way we could understand (for the most part). I only wish they drew Miriya better because she looks awful at times. Not sure if I'm the only one, but as a kid I was more drawn towards the girls who were on the 'bad' side like Miriya. Also @3:41 This should be the origin story of the meme.. 'because reasons' lol

To answer your questions about the rushed nature of the story, the lapses in animation quality, and the development of the relationship between Max and Mirya...to start with, Macross' animators were often HUGELY behind schedule, throughout the first two-thirds of the series. The episodes "Phantasm" and "Global's Report" were specifically constructed to get them back on schedule with the re-using of previous animation...and this did help, a little. Unfortunately, this incredibly rushed atmosphere in the studio would cause the animation to suffer from time to time, because they were cutting corners everywhere they could--they had little choice in the matter. Another huge schedule-related issue was the fact that Macross was originally only supposed to be a 24 episode series, and they were trying to cram as much story in there as they could--they were in a race to the finish line. This is why everything is so rushed--production and story line alike. Once the series became a hit (midway through all this mess), then approval was given for 12 more episodes. You will likely see differences between the two batches of episodes. Regarding Max and Mirya, there was no difference in their story line between the Japanese and American versions...their story is totally intact, though (minor spoiler here) their future family plans will differ greatly between Macross and Robotech...though this is largely due to Harmony Gold's need to tie in the "Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross" series as the second part of the Robotech Saga.

If you ever wanted a summary of what Rick Hunter is like, all you have to do is listen to his conversation with Max about getting married. Sure, the show would have benefitted with more time spent on character development and backstory but bottom line is that it's a cartoon. It was also a very rushed job both in it's original production as well as the US adaptation so there's a lot of lost opportunity and overlooked details and errors both visually and in the dialogue. What you're watching doesn't have much edited out, only a few minutes per episode at most. The remastered version has re-inserted some of the footage that was taken out for the 1985 broadcast but nothing that contained dialogue.

Been expecting this for a while. I guessed this is where it would lead when Miriya decided to shrink down so she could infiltrate the micronians and find her enemy ace. That she would meet Max - not realize who he was and fall in love. It was an "Ah, no. They wouldn't...." so I had to check the wiki and found out "Oh, yeah! They did!!!" Knew they'd get married - didn't know they'd do it this quick. Talk about a whirlwind.

After this episode, the animation quality only dips to this level one or two more times. Some GREAT animation lies ahead in the next few episodes.

You have to also remember that this is wartime and these are people who are consciously aware that they could die at any moment. Much like in World War 2, soldiers and pilots would often rapid fire marry becauae there just wasnt time for a very kong engagement

Starblazers stuck pretty close to the original and the company that owned the US rights was bought buy the company that owns Yamato. In fact when they remade the original two series the official name is Star Blazer: Space Battleship Yamato.

No, the shows Robotech Macross Saga and SDF Macross, are nearly identical. The chief difference is the nature of "Protoculture". In this it is a type energy/fuel plasma. Which has subatomic effects. There is more but it spoilery. In Macross, it is the "culture" that made the Zentraedi and all their impliments of war. I don't consider that a spoiler, because they has already spoken of them in the show without naming them.

Howdy Warp, I recently found your channel and have been chewing through the catalogue. Definitely enjoying the takes and, jokes, bobs, and weaves. This show is a childhood classic of mine and I think, story wise, still holds up really well; so enjoy it to the finish.

I love these episodes and you are NOT prepared for the twists and turns...

Once you finish the Macross series, you might wanna react to "Do You Remember Love" which is a feature length animated movie about these events and a loos retelling of the show. The idea of it being its a "movie within this universe." and the characters in it are playing actors based on the real characters and taking liberty with the actual story. There many a legal battle as to why it has never "officially" been released in the West, but you can find it on UA-cam in an old bad 80s English dub version or Japanese with Subtitles and I think a modern English dub version. The animation is Anime Ghost in the Shell style (close to it) and I enjoy it a lot.

If you decide to try reading the books and want to delve into this there is a short story called 'The Butcher of Anderson Station' about Fred Johnson that is more nuanced and shows his conflict and what finally made him go 'fuck this, I'm getting out of the UNN and going independent/OPA' The short story is rather compact and the audiobook is only an hour long

Since no one else mentioned it, the belter prostitute Gia was played by a Canadian actress named Sara Mitich. More recently she played Lt. Nilsson on Star Trek Discovery. The show was mostly made in Ontario, Canada, so many of the locations (like Avasarala's home) and minor recurring actors are Canadian.

One of the reasons btw this epi was the first epi of season 2, soo many fan letters wrote in asking what is Vulcan like? Can we see vulcan culture? Etc. And we get amok time, great epi and quite famous. Ever seen the old movie csble guy? At the medieval times, they reinact the famous kirk vs spock scene, and they use the first same weapon and matthew broderick gets torn on his shirt in the same spot kirk does etc. And its shown and referenced and or the music is with the famous fighting scene in alot of shows Ie family guy etc.
